The Camera Operator Chronicles: Training Officially Commences

Posted on January 6th, 2009 January 6th, 2009 by MEGA

After a few meetings to establish the new training schedule, my 1st training took place on Tuesday, February 4th, 2003- and it was a trial-by-fire!  Some people like to learn things before they do them.  Some people like to do things before they learn them. For learning Video, a combination of both was a good for me- 1st education, then application.

Saturday, February 1st, 2003 was the educational pre-brief overview with two of my directors to prepare me for what to expect on my 1st training day.  Even though that Tuesday was ‘just’ a Bible Study service, because everything was new to me, there was a lot of action for me to take in- especially during the opening music segment which included CG (Character Generation) operating.  Initially, my on-the-job traning Tuesday was working with the remote controlled cameras, which were kind like old-school joystick controllers.  After/As those were mastered, the next step would be to the manual controlled, tripod cameras.

As I close this post, let me suggest that if you find it tough to take direction from elders or even peers in authority, you may need to take a crash course in Submission- learning to obey what is asked of you without disregarding the directions given.  The two most common roles known in Video Production are those of Producer and Director.  Directors dialogue with camera operators on what shots to take.   In simple terms, Directors direct- they Give Directions.  Those directions are called Commands.  Commands sometimes don’t come in the softest of tones and/or sweetest forms of expression.  So, again, if you find it challenging to accept someone’s commands, check your emotional capacity to handle coarse communication before you consider a career in Video Production.
